A fruit tree is a tree that bears fruit and a flower containing one or more seeds. However, because all trees of flowering plants produce fruit this term in horticultural usage applies to trees providing fruit as human food.

Buying fruit trees

Here are a few points to bear in mind whenever you decide to get a variety of fruit tree such as hardiness, the type of pollination it requires, disease resistance, pests and its overall size at maturity.

Fruit tree pruning

Pruning fruit trees is a technique that is mostly employed by gardeners to control growth, remove dead or diseased wood or stimulate the formation of flowers and fruit buds. The economical pruning is done early in the season as at that time buds begin to break and one can pinch off the soft tissue with the help of his/her fingers. Many home fruit growers make the mistake that they plant a tree and forget it until it begins to bear but a very careful attention to pruning and training young trees will ultimately determine their productivity and longevity. Good pruning and training will also prevent later injury from weak crotches that break under snow or fruit load.

Fruit Tree Planting Foundation:

The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF), founded by David Wolfe (creator of Longevity Now), is a unique nonprofit charity that is dedicated to planting edible, fruitful trees and plants to benefit needy populations and improve the surrounding air, soil, and water. FTPF sets a goal and that is straightforward. Fruit trees heal the environment by cleaning the air, improving soil quality, preventing soil erosion, creating animal habitat, sustaining valuable water sources, and providing healthy nutrition.

Grafting and Budding Fruit trees:

Fruit trees cannot be reproduced the original cultivar from seed. The only way to reproduced fruit trees is grafting. Grafting describes any of a number of techniques in which a section of a stem with leaf buds is inserted into the stock of a tree. Grafting is useful as it is good for more than reproduction of an original cultivar. It is used to repair injured fruit trees or for top working an established tree to one or more different cultivars.

  2. Hi!

my husband and i are current superheroes with elements 4 life, plus reading your books and appreciating every ounce of light you share…THANK YOU! we own a fitness business in ann arbor, Michigan…it’s called Pure Barre. Ever month, we do a “donation only” class on saturday, where we pick an organization or a cause to give our $$ to. we would LOVE to do a donation only class for the FTPF, PLUS a planting of at least a few fruit trees on the property of our business. i still have to discuss this with the owners of the property, but i guarantee they are good to go…very sweet, caring group of young people who just purchased the property and are already making significant landscape ameliorations…it’s an historic brick building on the outskirts of town, there’s quite a nice lawn area, complimented by a concrete structure that lends to some shade, and then beyond that, a natural wetland area…DEFINITELY a perfect place for some fruit trees, i imagine…i will have to look into which ones exactly, though…any ideas with your planting expertise??

THANKS, and let’s be in touch! my cell is: 734.355.6199

    peace&love always,
